Don't Clap For Us

Independent Thinking founder Ian Gilbert has a message for the country about how teachers have risen to the challenge of the Covid crisis.

Don't clap for us. We're teachers.

We're used to being the ideological plaything of politicians.

We're used to being the butt of all the jokes about school holidays and finishing at three.

We're used to people thinking we're sitting at home doing nothing because they keep reading that schools are 'closed'.

We're used to attacks by the Daily Mail.

We're used to being told how to do our jobs by people who know better because they went to school once.

We're used to being blamed for all of society's ills and then being blamed further when we fail to single-handedly put them right.

We're used to being asked to do more and more with less and less.

We're used to never quite being good enough, no matter what the test results show.

We're used to people mistaking kindness for being soft, fatigue for being delicate, stress for being weak.

So, no, please don't clap for us.

We're teachers. We're used to it.

Just say thank you. [ITL]
