Six Quick Things from St Ebbe's Primary School
Some food for thought following Ian Gilbert's visit to an inspiring CofE primary school in Oxford
- You can do what’s necessary to satisfy external measures such as SAT results and Ofsted AND do it in such a way that you remain true to your vision of what an education should be.
- Experiencing joy as you walk through the school gates each morning will change how everyone approaches the day ahead.
- Not only can schools be rooted in love and compassion, when they are, they become happier, more resilient communities.
- Take time to find every child’s passion and allow them to flourish with it. This will also help with numeracy and literacy, regardless of what that passion is.
- When the head teacher brings their authentic self to school, it gives permission to the whole community to be themselves too.
- It’s possible to let children be children – playing, taking risks, exploring, being curious, being active, being unconstrained, exploring the wider world, learning for themselves, having fun – and still cover the curriculum. Just don’t kiss the chickens.
Thanks to headteacher Tina Farr for showing us around and for being the sort of school leader we love - honest, authentic, creative and committed to doing the right thing by her community. [ITL]
