When They Go Low

At Independent Thinking, we’re naturally optimistic and prefer to see the best in most people (except for misogynist, racist, sexist, selfish, abusive, lying, molesting climate-change deniers).

So, what with all that’s happening in the world, we thought we would identify fourteen really important lessons we can all share with young people, lessons we might otherwise have overlooked.

After all, as we all know deep down, hope is better than the alternative.

  1. In the absence of leaders, we’re all leaders. And that’s a good thing.
  2. There are no superheroes. If we want the world saved, then it’s down to us. And that’s a good thing.
  3. Democracy sucks. But it’s also better than the alternatives.
  4. If you have a voice, the only way the world will know is if you use it. Otherwise, you have no voice.
  5. Having a voice doesn’t mean you’ll always get your way.  But not using your voice means you’ll never get your way.
  6. When there is majority rule, you work harder to stand by the minorities. All of them.
  7. When bad stuff is happening, doing nothing is like doing bad stuff.
  8. Ultimately, people can’t make you do bad stuff. You always have a choice.
  9. When you disagree with someone, use your energy trying to understand them, not persuading them.
  10. Everything swings like a pendulum. But sometimes we need to help the pendulum back.
  11. Saving the planet involves the little things we do on a daily basis. No-one can make us use oil or plastic or beef or electricity or paper…
  12. If history has taught us anything it is that we never learn from history. History is full of empires that eventually ate themselves and then the world order had to start again.
  13. Change is scary. Scary is fine. When we’re scared we find a hand to hold. If we’re holding hands, they can’t win.
  14. When they go low, take flight.

We hope that helps. [ITL]
