When we first met Ian Taylor, we asked him what was the secret to getting young people to excel in maths?
We had heard how he had come to national attention during his NQT year for transforming the maths lessons at an incredibly challenging school in the North East of England, that he had zero exclusions and high results, that he had been snapped up by a large Academy chain to share his magic with colleagues across a growing number of primary and secondary schools nationally, that he was also in demand working at departmental levels, showing heads of department how to use data as a tool to make the teaching and learning better all round. So we asked him, effectively, what is the secret of memorable, enjoyable and effective maths teaching?
‘Many young people find maths boring, irrelevant and hard,’ he said. ‘My lessons aren’t like that. At all.’

"Ian Taylor was one of the most inspirational presenters I have ever experienced on a training course and I wished the staff could all have been there! "
“Our day with Ian Taylor was inspiring, provoking and reassuring. He left us energised about mathematics and how we can teach it very well in our classrooms. He also left us with an attitude and approach to ensuring we develop a depth of mathematical understanding in our children that can ensure a real mastery of the primary curriculum.”
"Thank you so much for the session that you led last week, it was a real tonic which is pretty amazing when we are at the end of a long year and exhausted. You are a bundle of enthusiasm with a realistic grasp of a teacher’s job and offer lots of practical and relevant suggestions and resources and ideas to facilitate us developing our practice for the benefit of student’s experience"
"Excellent. Made me go back to my classroom and change it. Also reinforced that I was in the right job!"
"Inspirational and encouraging - suggested some very practical ideas that I have used already. He was very 'down to earth' and did not feel 'preached to'"
"There are times when we just need to be reminded, rekindled, rejuvenated back into what we love....teaching"
Being a governor is an incredibly important task these days so we are delighted when we are asked to support them in their work in all sorts of schools around the country. Apart from ensuring the event is an entertaining and enjoyable one for all, especialy as it is so often on a rainy Saturday, we make sure our input is informative, relevant, up to date and guarantees all governors go back into their schools knowing what to look for, what to do and the rights sorts of questions to ask.
