When Michael Gove (remember him?) referred to the academics working in teacher training as ‘the blob’ we like to think he was referring to Phil.
To be a member of this ‘blob’ you need to be a thoughtful, educated and highly intelligent professional at a respected university. You need to know that teaching and learning is complex, that it needs qualified, well-trained, reflective teachers, constantly and collaboratively updating their practice. You need to help teachers understand the power of education to do genuine social good and help them see through the government’s ‘command and control’ approach to school ‘freedoms’. You need to be the sort of educator who helps teachers look beyond the headline-grabbing sound bites and say, no, there is more to education - and what you are doing - than this.
An internationally-recognised academic researcher, experienced teacher trainer, academic supervisor at Masters and Doctorate levels and inspiring educational thinker, Phil does all of those things and more. Now, more than ever, the world of education needs people like him.
