“Because we’ve always done it that way is no reason to always do it that way”

There are few people with Mark's range of expertise across so many phases, levels and sectors of education or his ability to cut through the 'but that's how we've always done it' line with practical alternatives that can work in any classroom.

First in his sights, and one of the biggest bones of contention in school life, dividing academics, teachers and indeed families alike, was the gnarly topic of homework. What Mark has shown through his teaching across a variety of schools, is that when it comes to homework, there is always another way.

His approach, something we call ‘Unhomework', shows that children and young people can engage in meaningful, high quality work outside of the classroom in a way that makes life better for all concerned.

A former school leader who went back to the classroom, Mark's down-to-earth, no-nonsense attitude to teaching and learning is proof that teachers can maintain standards, have children working harder than they do, get their Sunday afternoons back, create a genuinely inclusive classroom culture and ensure everyone enjoys the process.

Feedback from recent events include:

"Thank you very much for the course, I thought it was great. I will be starting to Unhomework my class this week. It fits very nicely into my area of development (culture for/of learning) and as such I will be trying to persuade the school to move in this direction"

"Your inspiring and valuable Unhomework INSET was the tonic we needed to kickstart the year"

"Just to say thank you for the fantastic, stimulating day you gave us on Monday 17th in London. I can't believe its taken me a week to get around to emailing to say thanks and to ask if you would forward me a copy of your presentation as I really loved some of those slides. I feel inspired to try a little harder to get it right and make it fun at the same time. Thanks so much for your time and hard work. I have nearly finished the book and it is a great read"

Parent Event

For many schools, getting parents to the school for an event is something that is only beaten in difficulty by getting the right parents to school for an event. That said, the parents who do come to our Learning and Motivation for Parents Events always head home buzzing with ideas that are not only helpful in dealing with their children but also very relevant for their own careers and personal development.
