It would be easy to say, 'You won't have met anyone like Jaz before'. Her passion for the work that teachers do, for the potential teachers have to change lives, for the power that education has to rescue children from even the most terrible of backgrounds, her willingness to put herself out there and see what happens, it all adds up to make Jaz one of those people who you know you will never forget.
Yet you will have met someone like Jaz before, but perhaps you never noticed.
Jaz's story is one of growing up in the midst of most appalling abuse, poverty and hardship. From primary school through to university, education was her only hope yet, of all the educational professionals she encountered, there were only five who made her life bearable. Five teachers (and, importantly, one pimp) literally saved her life.
However, we are not our stories and Jaz shares ideas and insights from her life in her work with school leaders, educators, parents and young people with humour, energy, honesty and an unswerving optimism in people and in education in general, and teachers in particular. Full of practical advice, her message is neatly summed up in her own words to those five teachers from her past - 'Because of you, this is me'.
Why does she do it? So that next time you meet someone like Jaz, you will be ready.
