Our Kids Can
The 2020 Scottish Leadership Conference
Monday 14th September, Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, Edinburgh
In partnership with Iain White Creative Leadership
A special one-day conference with four leading speakers to support Scottish schools of all phases and backgrounds as they bring the best out of 'our kids'.
Come and join four experienced and inspiring speakers with more than their fair share of school leadership between them as they share ideas and strategies to help transform the lives of children from some of our most challenging communities in Scotland.
(Real) David Cameron
Independent Thinking Associate David Cameron has covered all the bases in education from class teaching, through school leadership to leadership in local authorities. He has been involved in national developments in Scotland from Standard Grade to Curriculum for Excellence taking in Devolved School Management, Outdoor Learning, support for Looked-After Children and more. He is now a leading educational voice in demand across the UK and beyond and has made sure that he is still in touch through constantly working in and with schools, dealing with young people from all backgrounds and constantly learning.
On appointment to Dalmarnock Primary 14 years ago, Nancy was tasked with bringing five very different communities together. With the school central to the rejuvenation of the area and Nancy's passion for creating a more socially just and equitable world, it seemed natural that the school became the heart of the community. Nancy sees potential, talent and hope throughout her community and there are lessons for all of us in her approach - a 'can-do' attitude and a commitment to doing the right thing, regardless of bureaucracy or personal effort.
Iain has 25 years’ experience as a headteacher in two different Scottish secondary schools. With an eye firmly on the practical, he will talk about the leadership approaches he employed that enabled him both to turn around the fortunes of one school and also establish another from scratch. He will be honest about the highs and the lows, the challenges and the solutions, his proudest - and his hardest - moments, encouraging delegates to reflect upon their own practice and how it may be developed to further enrich the lives of 'our kids'.
Independent Thinking Associate Dave Harris is a successful headteacher with many years’ experience working in and leading schools in challenging socio-economic environments, including creating a transformational through-school in a former pit village. He has now built a second career for himself as an in-demand international speaker and advisor, shining a light on the various forms of madness being visited on schools today in the name of standards and effectiveness. He also helps lead Independent Thinking and is keen to explore how this event could produce further collaboration between this unique international organisation and schools across Scotland.
