Here is what Associate Tim Benton had to say about a trip to India on behalf of Independent Thinking:

'My Indian experience was overwhelmingly positive, and it was fascinating to see the 'flat earth' up close!

I don't think I was quite prepared for how Indian education works - lots of rote learning, with little breath for creativity or thinking skills.  The children learn vast amount of information, and the speed at which they work is astounding. Their mental arthimetic, especially, is quite spectacular.

The teachers there, however, were very open to professional development and soaked up my INSETs on creative learning, with enthusiasm.  The sessions were long; a two day programme in each school, working for around 4 -5 hours each of the days, so between 8 and 10 hours worth of INSET with each group.  Numbers - usually around 50 to 60 teachers. Mostly women.

Taranvir, who runs the Achievers' Programme is great; he accompanied me for most of my travels, and made sure I was well fed and watered!  Accommodation is basic, in most instances, but comfortable.  I stayed in a mix of hotels and school guest houses.  I have to say though, I was well looked after.  I also spent 6 days staying with Taranvir and his family in Chandigarh, which was lovely. They are very hospitable people and made me feel one of the family while I was there.'
