For many years - and for many reasons - the purpose of school was about not getting children to think for themselves. In fact, thinking for themselves was the last thing society needed.

So, people like Will Ord, who has made a career out of helping young people to think deeply and intelligently, would have really messed up the system and probably brought the country down with him.

Even today, uniforms, sitting in rows, timetables, rote learning, punishment and reward systems and other such aspects of the school day we take for granted are the last vestiges of an education system whose purpose was to develop conformity and obedience.

But the 21st century demands young people who can not only think but think for themselves and this is why Will is so much in demand around the country today.

Drawing on his seminal work in Philosophy for Children - he was chair of SAPERE for several years – and his experience in education as an associate lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, as a former Head of RE and a Deputy Head of VIth Form, Will shows teachers how to work with children so they develop into ‘critical, caring, creative, and collaborative learners who can make their education a great adventure’.

He is also passionate about the link between improved thinking skills and the raising of self-esteem in all young people.

Over the last decade Will has worked with teachers of all stages in ten countries across the world, has spoken regularly at conferences and has written for the TES as well as for school text books on thinking, RE and Citizenship.
