Outstanding Faculties Supporting Faculties to Become Outstanding

Sometimes the best people to support Faculties in their journey towards being outstanding are the ones who have been along that journey themselves. 

At Priory Community School, an Academy Trust in Weston-Super-Mare there are three such Faculties – English, Maths and Science – who are now keen to support other Faculties around the country in a unique partnership with Independent Thinking.

For the last few years Independent Thinking has been a trustee and a friend of the school, watching its five A*-C results grow from 54% in 2008 to over 84% in 2011 (38% to nearly 70% if you include English and Maths).

The school is highly innovative and prepared to break the rules and do things differently in order to educate children properly (and not just play the system to make the results look good as is so often the case). For example, at a time when most schools were banning YouTube, Priory had its own YouTube channel used for learning, homework and even parent newsletters. Rather than employing the teachers who best suit the profile of a teacher they employ teachers who best suit the profile of the children.

And it is the only school we know were children are greeted each morning by a six-foot hedgehog.

Now, as part of Independent Thinking’s drive to prove that innovative practice and creativity can raise results without having to follow the ‘rule book’ we are delighted to collaborate with the school to offer not one but three separate ways other schools can learn from and be inspired to excellence by Priory’s experience.

Starting with the English (66% to nearly 84% A*-C last year), Maths (65% to 72%) and Science (71% to 94%. Quite a leap from the 28% it got in 2005!) Faculties we are delighted to offer the following programme of support.

You will receive intensive support over five days with the Faculty, spread across a term or two as appropriate. This will be divided up between time spent in Priory - observing not just the Faculty in action but also the way the whole school embraces innovation and challenge – and visits to your school to support your Faculty in situ. How you divide the five days up will be entirely up to you in discussion with Priory.
