The Expedition

A 12-week circumnavigation of the British Isles to capture a unique published overview exploring our coastal life from a combination of natural, historical, sociological and artistic viewpoints.

The Point

To enrich people’s lives by encouraging them to appreciate the wealth to be found on their doorstep should they slow down and consider more deeply what is around them.

The Crew

Six members comprising:

  • Expedition Leader and writer Ian Gilbert, founder of Independent Thinking Ltd, and a leading speaker and writer involved in education and training
  • Natural history expert
  • Social history expert
  • Artist/photographer
  • Professional skipper
  • Professional navigator


The Vessel

Independent Thinking Ltd’s Cuttyhunk 54’ twin masted ocean–going sailing vessel Gallivanter III.

The Itinerary

Leaving St Katherine's Dock at early June to sail anticlockwise around the British Isles arriving back at Greenwich late September.

The Process

Apart from individual projects that the crew members may undertake for their own academic or scientific research the Around Deeply Expedition 2005 will prepare a major hardback book capturing the essence of coastal Britain in words and pictures.
