Research has found that external motivation - punishment/ reward/ kicking/ cajoling/ bribery etc... - inhibits internal motivation.
In other words, the more we do it for them, the less they can do it for themselves.
Intrinsic motivation is what we need to develop in our classrooms and that means looking at what we do and how we do it.
