I give my Year 7 students "Thinking Pads" on which they can doodle or jot things down. Often they just doodle while I'm talking to the class but show subsequently that they have listened and understood. My perception is that they have listened more attentively than they did before the thinking pads were introduced but have no research data to back it up - as yet!
