Learning With a Great Ring to It

A simple mnemonic for creating memorable learning

Show Reader Friendly Version

This is one that David Keeling has introduced to thousands of young people to great effect.

For anything to be remembered it needs a R.I.N.G. to it:

Relevant - why do I need this, how will this help me, how does this affect me, what does it mean to me, WIIFM?

Interesting - The Von Restorff Effect argues that things that are 'novel' and 'high contrast' are remembered easily so make sure the learning has, if not always a wow factor, at least an 'oooh' factor

Naughty - we have great memories for things that are risky, edgy, saucy, odd, bizarre or illegal in several American states. They don't have to share their thoughts, just let them sit there with a far-away look

a Giggle - emotions and memory go together. Laughter whilst learning has been proven in laboratory conditions to improve learning and recall

As David says, use one of these and you will remember; use all four and you will never forget

Love the mnemonic but it's a bit naughty to get you grammar wrong! Under 'NAUGHTY' please just let them sit THERE with a far away look.

Wow - I'm really impressed!  You took notice so quickly.  I've really enjoyed browsing the site (need to do these things because otherwise I forget!!)

Your inset on Monday had definite RING qualities.  Thank you for replacing a few bubbles in the flat waters of my brain. Penny
